The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
